It is a genetically inherited disorder that affects the ability of red blood cells to carry oxygen to parts of the body which causes painful episodes or crisis.There are three common types of sickle cell disease in the United States: Hemoglobin SS or sickle cell anemia, Hemoglobin SC disease, and Hemoglobin sickle beta-thalassemia.

Sickle cell trait is a person who carries one sickle hemoglobin producing gene inherited from their parents and one normal hemoglobin gene.
